Making Wishes – Green M&Ms

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I hadn’t heard of this method to wish, however, I found it on the internet so it must be true!

Apparently one can wish on green M&Ms.  Since we’re approaching Christmastime one should be able to find quite a few green M&Ms in red and green packages! Happy Wishing!

Making Wishes – Autumn Leaves

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

In my attempt to catch up with the monthly “Making Wishes” installment of this blog (I totally missed September 18th) I thought I’d combine September’s installment with the arrival of the Fall season. Autumn has indeed officially started (September 22) already.  It’s been said that if one catches a falling leaf before it touches the ground that person should make a wish.  Theories vary, however, with what to do with the leaf after the wish is made.  Some folks say the leaf should be kept and preserved.  Others say the leaf should be let go to fall to the ground after the wish is made.  Although a bit early for the beautiful fall leaf colors in the Philadelphia area, once the trees do start turning I hope you’re able to catch a leaf before it falls to the ground.  Make a wish!  And whether you choose to keep the leaf or continue to let it fall I hope your wish comes true!

Making Wishes – Ladybugs

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

I’m currently on vacation and while we were at the beach today my niece found a ladybug.  That sorta struck me as funny —  I’m not used to seeing ladybugs at the beach.  It reminded me, however, of the monthly “making wishes” blog.

The lady bug wish — If a ladybug lands on you, say ‘ladybug, ladybug, fly away home,’ and if it flies off you wish!  The one we found today happened to be dead.  I’m hoping that’s not a bad omen. ;)

Making Wishes – Quilts

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

I heard recently that if you buy a quilt you are entitled to make a wish.  Then, each time you touch the quilt the wish is reinforced.

I had never heard of that method of wishing so I looked it up online before writing about it.  Not only did I find reinforcement of the quilt wishing technique…I found a quilt pattern that’s called the The Wishing Ring. The photo above shows it.  There’s at least one more quilt “wishing” pattern called The Wishing Star. Amazing!  If you’re in the market for a quilt don’t forget to make a wish after buying it!

Making Wishes – Coins

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Many of us have either made a wish by throwing a coin into a fountain or walked passed someone making a wish this way. It’s one of the most common wishing techniques. It usually involves making a wish before throwing a coin into a body of water. It may have been born from the concept of “wishing wells” and old European folklore. Apparently, some people believed gods lived at the bottom of water wells and saying a wish aloud and then thanking the gods by throwing coins into the well was almost a guaranteed way to have your wish granted. ;) Some believers take it a step further by considering your wish granted ONLY if the coin landed “heads-up.” If I was a god I wouldn’t want folks pelting coins into my home while at the same time requesting favors. What do you think?

(Please look before you wish! If there is anything living in the water don’t throw the coins. Studies have shown that the metal isn’t good for the wellbeing of the living organisms. Thanks!)

Making Wishes – Eyelashes

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

One of the stranger ways to make wishes, at least for me, is the eyelash wish.  The theory is that when one of your eyelashes falls out and you find it, blow it off your fingertip and make a wish!  I admit, that’s not bad.  I can handle that.

However, there are some folks that say if another person finds the eyelash (shiver) he/she should do it for you.  Do what?  Ughh…the theory states that the eyelash finder should declare that he/she found an eyelash and then (shiver) lift it off your check.  He/she should ask you to make a wish.  Then the wisher is supposed to blow it off the finder’s finger.  (Shiver.)  Ughh…I’m sorry but unless this person is a significant other or a close family member… please don’t be lifting eyelashes off my face!  Please do me a favor and tell me the eyelash is there so I can retrieve it and blow if off my finger myself.    ;)
